Afterslip distribution using poroelastic and viscoelastic media:
Large earthquakes can cause stress changes in the surrounding crust and mantle, and lead to time-dependent post-seismic deformation. The study of post-seismic deformation and afterslip distribution has become a priority, because data on the afterslip distribution provide information on the stress changes, frictional characteristics, and material properties. We have developed an analysis method for afterslip distribution using poroelastic and viscoelastic media. -
Ocean drilling project - Kanto Asperity Project (KAP)
Kanto Asperity Project (KAP) is a proposal for IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program). Our scientific goal is to understand characteristics of three different events (Taisho, Genroku, and slow slip), and to improve earthquake generation models using slow slip events. We propose a deep drilling program for obtaining fault materials and pore pressure data, and a long-term monitoring program for observing several cycles of slow slip events. Now, we start observations of crustal deformation by ocean bottom pressure gauges. -
Seismic structure and seismicity at ocean ridges and their relation to hydrothermal activity:
This study investigates relations between ocean ridge spreading systems and hydrothermal systems using a seismic reflection/refraction survey and seismicity observations. We conducted the surveys at the Mariana trough and the central Indian ridge.
Research Subjects
I am studying the following themes for understanding earthquake generation processes.
(1) Seismicity and seismic structure of crust and upper mantle at subduction zones
(2) Development of inversion methods for slip distribution and simulation models for earthquake generation.
